The Shadow Economy

They are essentially nameless people standing on corners. People who work for cheaper prices and do all kinds of manual labor. Or people who provide a service whether it be love, drugs or food without the proper legal documentation.

This is what is called the Shadow Economy, but there are other names that it may be better known by. The couple that popped out to me from the feature was black market or under-the-table. The article came from salon.com

Salon.com is partnering with New America Media and launching this series of the Shadow Economy. After the initial sum up, they have their first one in the series in which they talk to a male escort.

This investigative feature managed to catch my eye with their photos on the page. The feature was intriguing because it seems like if you try to be an honest worker you end up getting paid less and have a harder time survivng.

After seeing the movie "Blow" I would walk around saying that I was going to become a drug dealer. It never happened, but according to the feature this market is growing.

It also talks about how people find ways to survive. In the end it definately shows the fortitude of people and a bit of a problem with our system.
